We are currently seeking an exceptional Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) to join a highly regarded primary school in Hammersmith. This is a pivotal leadership opportunity for an experienced and passionate educator who is committed to ensuring that every child — regardless of background or need — is given the opportunity to thrive.
Working as part of a collaborative and forward-thinking staff team, the SENCo will lead on the strategic development of the school’s SEND provision and will play a central role in promoting a culture of inclusion and high expectations.
This position also includes a small teaching commitment (approximately 0.5 days per week) to maintain a close connection to classroom practice and to model effective, inclusive teaching for colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
*
Lead the strategic development and day-to-day operation of the school’s SEND provision in line with the school’s vision and statutory requirements.
*
Identify pupils with special educational needs and ensure high-quality, evidence-based interventions are implemented to support progress and wellbeing.
*
Manage and review Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), ensuring effective communication between teachers, parents, and external professionals.
*
Advise and support colleagues on best practice for supporting pupils with a range of additional needs, including SEND and EAL.
*
Oversee accurate record-keeping and data analysis to monitor pupil progress and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
*
Ensure the school’s SEND policy reflects current legislation and practice, and that all staff are aware of their responsibilities.
*
Coordinate and lead professional development sessions to build staff confidence and expertise in inclusive teaching strategies.
*
Work closely with parents, carers, and external agencies to ensure a collaborative approach to meeting individual pupil needs.
*
Contribute to whole-school improvement planning and ensure that inclusion remains central to the school’s ethos and practice.
Person Specification
Essential:
*
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in the UK.
*
A strong track record of successfully supporting pupils with SEND in mainstream or specialist settings.
*
Excellent knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice, current legislation, and effective inclusive strategies.
*
Proven experience in identifying, assessing, and implementing effective interventions for children with additional needs.
*
Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
*
A collaborative, solution-focused approach and the ability to build positive relationships with pupils, parents, and staff.
*
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children.
Desirable:
*
The National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCo), or a willingness to work towards it.
*
Experience leading or contributing to whole-school SEND strategy or staff training.
*
Experience supporting pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL).
