Job Description

SEND Science Teacher Location: Somerset Start Date: September 2025 (New Academic Year) TeacherActive is working in partnership with a specialist SEND provision in Somerset, seeking a committed and compassionate SEND Science Teacher to join their team from September 2025. This setting supports pupils across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism (ASD), and additional learning needs. Many pupils have experienced barriers to mainstream education and benefit from a structured, supportive environment where relationships and consistency are key. As a SEND Science Teacher, you will deliver adapted, engaging, and meaningful science lessons that support both academic progress and pupils’ emotional development, helping them to re-engage with learning and build confidence. The Setting This specialist provision offers: Small class sizes and high staff-to-pupil ratios A strong focus on emotional wellbeing and regulation A structured, predictable environment A curriculum tailored to meet individual needs Staff take a trauma-informed and relational approach, recognising that behaviour is a form of communication and that positive relationships underpin successful learning. About the Role You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, supported by experienced teaching assistants and specialist professionals. The role balances academic teaching with emotional and behavioural support, ensuring pupils are ready to learn and able to succeed. Your responsibilities will include: Planning and delivering differentiated science lessons for KS3 and KS4 pupils Adapting content to meet a wide range of cognitive, emotional, and behavioural needs Creating a calm, structured, and engaging classroom environment Supporting emotional regulation, confidence, and positive behaviour Using practical, visual, and hands-on approaches to maximise engagement Working closely with teaching assistants, therapists, and SEN professionals Contributing to EHCP targets, reviews, and individual learning plans Promoting independence, communication, and life skills alongside subject knowledge The Ideal Candidate Will Have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS / ECTs welcome) Experience working with KS3/KS4 pupils with SEND, particularly SEMH and autism Understanding of trauma-informed practice and adaptive teaching strategies A calm, consistent, and relationship-focused approach A genuine commitment to supporting pupils’ academic, emotional, and social development Resilience, flexibility, and a positive mindset In Return, You Can Expect A flexible and pupil-centred curriculum Ongoing CPD and SEND-focused professional development A dedicated consultant available 24/7 PAYE pay structure with no hidden fees or umbrella deductions Competitive rates of pay Interested?
