Learning Mentor – Alternative Provision (Plymouth)
Full-Time | £90–£95 per day | Immediate Start | Must Drive
Are you an experienced Learning Mentor or Teaching Assistant looking for a rewarding role supporting young people with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH)? Do you have the patience, resilience, and empathy to make a genuine difference in the lives of students who need a little extra support to thrive?
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Learning Mentor to join a forward-thinking Alternative Provision (AP) in Plymouth. This is a full-time, long-term position, ideal for someone who is passionate about helping pupils with high anxiety, SEMH needs, and additional learning barriers to achieve their potential — both academically and emotionally.
About the Role
As a Learning Mentor, you will work closely with a small group of students who require tailored support in a nurturing and structured environment. The role involves:
• Building trusting relationships with pupils who may have struggled in mainstream settings.
• Supporting emotional regulation, behaviour management, and engagement with learning.
• Assisting with small group or 1:1 sessions under the guidance of the class teacher or SENCo.
• Encouraging positive choices and helping students develop confidence and coping strategies.
• Liaising effectively with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and external agencies to ensure the best outcomes for each pupil.
This role would suit someone who is calm under pressure, firm but fair, and able to build rapport quickly. Experience working with SEMH, high-anxiety students, or challenging behaviour is essential, as is the ability to use initiative and remain consistent in approach.
About You
To be successful, you will:
• Have proven experience supporting children or young people with SEMH or similar additional needs.
• Be confident managing behaviour in a positive, restorative manner.
• Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Be reliable, compassionate, and able to adapt your approach to suit individual learners.
• Hold a full UK driving licence and have access to your own transport – this is essential due to the nature of the role and potential off-site work.
