Support Vulnerable Young People to Reconnect with Learning
Are you an experienced tutor or teacher with a background in supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN), social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, or who are school refusers?
We are looking for committed and compassionate tutors in the Haringey area to work with young people who are currently out of mainstream education, often due to anxiety, trauma, or mental health challenges. Referrals are made through the Local Authority (LA) and tuition is frequently the primary or sole source of education for these pupils.
About the Role
Subjects Required: English and Maths (Key Stage 3 & 4)
Location: Tuition will take place:
In the pupil’s home
In public settings (e.g. libraries, community centres)
Online (as appropriate)
Weekly Commitment: Minimum of 15 hours per week
Start Date: Ongoing demand – flexible start dates available
Who You’ll Be Supporting
Pupils with high levels of anxiety
School refusers who have disengaged from education
Young people with diagnosed or undiagnosed SEN
Those who may have experienced trauma, exclusion, or placement breakdowns
Pupils requiring a safe, calm, and consistent learning environment
These pupils benefit most from tutors who are empathetic, patient, and skilled at building trust and routine. Many are on EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) or undergoing assessment.
What We’re Looking For
Minimum 2 years’ UK teaching or tutoring experience
Strong background working with young people with SEN, SEMH, or those out of school
Confident delivering personalised, engaging sessions in English and/or Maths
Experience with school refusers or emotionally-based school non-attendance (EBSA) is highly desirable
Reliable, organised, and professional in all communications
Comfortable liaising with professionals (e.g. SENCOs, Social Workers, Virtual School staff)
Must complete session reports including attendance, progress, objectives, and observations
Ideal Candidate Qualities
Calm, consistent, and confident in managing challenging behaviours or emotional distress
Creative in lesson delivery – able to adapt to different needs and learning styles
Aware of safeguarding protocols and maintaining appropriate boundaries
Able to foster positive, long-term relationships with learners and support networks

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
