About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Design Engineer with extensive experience in highway design, particularly in the preparation and delivery of Section 278 and Section 38 schemes. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, coordination, and delivery of infrastructure projects for both public and private sector clients. Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D is essential.
You will work within a multi-disciplinary design team, supporting the design and delivery of highways and drainage schemes associated with new developments, highway improvements, and urban regeneration projects.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the design and delivery of Section 278 and Section 38 highway works in accordance with local authority and DMRB standards.
Prepare and review technical drawings, design models, and reports using AutoCAD Civil 3D and related software.
Undertake geometric highway design, including horizontal and vertical alignments, junction layouts, and roundabouts.
Produce drainage designs in accordance with national standards and sustainable drainage principles.
Liaise with clients, local authorities, and other stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered to specification, on time, and within budget.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
Contribute to project management, fee proposals, and design programme planning.
Ensure designs comply with health, safety, and environmental requirements.
Key Skills and Experience
Essential:
Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
Proven experience delivering Section 278 and Section 38 highway design projects.
Advanced working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D for highway and drainage design.
Strong understanding of DMRB, Manual for Streets, and local authority standards.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work to tight deadlines.
Desirable:
Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (CEng / IEng) status, or working towards it.
Experience using drainage design software (e.g., MicroDrainage, Causeway Flow).
Familiarity with 3D modelling, BIM workflows, and digital design processes.
Experience working within a consultancy environment.
