Some of their current projects include: • The design, installation, operation and funding of district heating system to serve 3500 homes as part of a major regeneration project. • The design and installation of a heat network in a rural community to replace oil boilers in 300 homes with centralised low carbon heat generation. • The design and installation of a ground source heat pump system to provide heating and cooling to a new development of 300 homes a gym and office building • The design, installation and operation of a new city centre wide low carbon district heating system • Developing detailed long-term decarbonisation plans for existing large scale district heating networks to allow them to transition from gas fired CHP led generation to low carbon generation. Role We are seeking a highly flexible, self-starting, post-graduate Senior engineer with demonstrable experience in the design of District Heating system infrastructure. The nominal location of the post will be Sheffield, but we have offices in London. based across the UK. You will be expected to visit prospective client sites and active construction sites throughout the UK from time to time. We are looking to develop teams of engineers that will be able to grow into designing a variety of energy related systems. It is anticipated, therefore, that the candidate would be seeking to broaden their skills horizon. This position will differ from conventional design responsibilities in that the engineer will be given the opportunity to ‘own’ a design project from development through to construction. Following the handover to our Build Team, the engineer will continue to monitor and evaluate feedback from the Build Team to help refine and improve the design and all future designs. You will report to the Director of Engineering. Specific Tasks Participating on the design and delivery of new energy network projects during the pre-construction and construction phases working with and supported by the wider Team. In more detail this will include: System Design & Analysis: Evaluation of project scope and design inception. Preliminary reporting and interpretation of GPR survey data. Identification of areas of design risk. Risk reporting and HAZID development. Lead the design of district heating systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. This includes designing piping networks and associated infrastructure using industry standard software in sisKMR and AutoCAD 3D. Technical Leadership: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and design teams. Lead the technical aspects of the design process, reviewing calculations, drawings, and specifications to ensure accuracy and quality. Project Management: Manage the delivery of district heating projects, including resource allocation, budgeting, and scheduling. Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors, suppliers, and clients, to ensure timely and successful project completion. Compliance & Standards: Ensure designs and systems comply with local, national, and international standards, regulations, and safety codes. Keep up to date with changes in legislation and industry best practices. Feasibility Studies: Conduct feasibility studies for new district heating projects, including risk assessments, and technical evaluations. Provide recommendations for the most efficient and sustainable solutions. Sustainability & Innovation: Promote energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable practices in the design of district heating systems. Stay informed about new technologies and innovations in district heating. Develop standardised DH working methods and procedures, and develop standardised DH design documentation to enhance efficiency in delivery of designs Stakeholder Communication: Act as a key point of contact for clients, suppliers, and other project stakeholders. Communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner to non-technical stakeholders. Construction delivery: Design and re-design support throughout Pre-Construction and Construction phases of work. Provide troubleshooting support for any operational issues or failures in district heating systems. Identify opportunities for system optimization and implement improvements to enhance efficiency and reliability. Reporting: Post construction evaluation and reporting to the Director of Engineering Candidate We are looking for an enthusiastic Senior DH Design Engineer with excellent design, technical, interpersonal and software skills who enjoys working collaboratively in dynamic multi-professional teams, assisting in all aspects of the delivery of projects from development to completion to achieve outstanding results. You will be able to show you have had 5-7 years of experience in this design area and you will have a keen interest in the field of Energy infrastructure for domestic, commercial and industrial buildings. You will have a keen eye for detail and be technically proficient. We will want you to join our journey toward a more environmentally and technically responsible and effective way of designing energy systems; moving away from conventional processes into a more innovative and free-thinking design environment. Knowledge and Qualifications Degree qualified in Mechanical, Civil or Energy Systems Engineering. Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in the design of district heating systems and/or related energy infrastructure. Experience/knowledge of GPR survey techniques Experience/knowledge of TM requirements, design and management of Local Authority representatives Highly numerate and with a comprehensive understanding of pipe design and pipe materials Experience in the deployment of low carbon energy sources such as ASHP and GSHP A broad understanding of energy legislation and compliance Skills Strong knowledge of district heating principles, energy transfer, and heat generation technologies. Experience with energy modelling and optimization tools. Understanding of Heat and Utility Networks. Familiarity with relevant local and international regulations, codes, and standards related to district heating, e.g. BS EN 13941 Highly competent in AutoCAD 3-D, Navisworks, or other similar design software Competent in the use of sisKMR (or similar stress analysis software) Fully IT proficient; Word, PowerPoint, Excel, email systems, etc. as a minimum. Excellent communication and presentations skills. Good organisational, time management and planning. Strong project management skills, including experience in budgeting, scheduling, and team coordination. Creative, inquisitive and enjoys solving problems. Willingness to question conventional design methods Remuneration and Info Remuneration: competitive with market. Base £60-£70k depending on experience.
