The opportunity
Our client is currently recruiting for a Senior Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) Engineer to join their growing nuclear/defence engineering team. This role will focus on the specification, design, and delivery of EC&I systems associated with mechanical handling and lifting equipment – such as cranes, hoists, and remote handling systems – used in highly regulated environments including nuclear facilities and defence installations.

Your duties and responsibilities will be
Lead EC&I engineering work packages on projects involving mechanical or remote handling systems in nuclear/defence facilities.
Design and specify control and instrumentation systems, including safety interlocks, power distribution, and monitoring for lifting and handling equipment.
Ensure designs are compliant with UK legislation (LOLER, PUWER, BS EN, IEC, IET Wiring Regs) and industry standards (ONR TAGs, Def Stan, JSPs, BS EN 61508).
Produce and review technical documentation: functional design specs, logic diagrams, wiring schematics, load studies, and system safety assessments.
Interface with multi-discipline teams including mechanical, civil/structural, and safety engineers to ensure integrated, compliant design solutions.
Support through-life phases including procurement, installation, factory acceptance testing (FAT), commissioning and handover.
Conduct or participate in safety assessments (e.g., HAZOP, FMEA, ALARP demonstrations) and provide technical input into safety case documentation.
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to design reviews, governance, and continuous improvement.You will have the following qualifications and experience
Degree or HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, or a related discipline.
Significant EC&I engineering experience within nuclear or defence environments.
Strong technical knowledge of mechanical handling/lifting systems and their associated EC&I infrastructure.
Familiarity with nuclear safety principles and the production of documentation to support regulatory compliance and assurance processes.
Competency with PLC/SCADA design and implementation, instrumentation selection, and control system architecture.
Experience working to UK nuclear site licence requirements or MoD security and assurance frameworks.
Eligible for UK Security Clearance (SC) as a minimum.It's great if you also have the following
Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it (IET, InstMC, etc.).
Experience with remote handling, hot cell systems, or shielded cell equipment.
Knowledge of SIL determination/assessment and Functional Safety (IEC 61511 / 61508).
Experience using ECAD tools such as AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN.
Familiarity with configuration management systems and gated project processes.
