Job Description

Senior Lawyer Location: Remote, ME15 6JQ Start Date: ASAP Contract Duration: 6+ Months Working Hours: Mon – Fri, 09:00 – 17:00, 37 Hours per week Pay Rate: £ 39.94 per hour  Job Ref: OR9922 Responsibilities Undertake an extensive legal caseload of complex property and regeneration-related work as a senior member of the MKLS Property and Regeneration Team, providing high-level legal advice and services to elected members, committees, senior managers, and staff across the MKS authorities (Maidstone, Swale & Tunbridge Wells BCs) and any other MKLS customer in accordance with Lexcel standards. Keep abreast of legal developments in property and regeneration and ensure that the MKLS Property and Regeneration Team operates in accordance with modern good practice. Provide legal supervision to less senior fee earners in the MKLS Property and Regeneration Team and work closely with Legal Support Officers to supervise the administrative support they provide on legal transactions. Commit to the Visions, Strategic Plans, and policy frameworks of the MKS authorities. Use and assist others in using information technology systems, including the case management system (Iken), to carry out duties efficiently and effectively. Participate in intra- and inter-departmental working parties and corporate groups across the MKS authorities. Represent the MKS authorities at external meetings as appropriate. Deputise for the Team Leader (Property and Regeneration) when required. Undertake other duties commensurate with the grade of the post. Engage in any required training and development. Comply fully with the Council’s Equal Opportunity Policy, Health and Safety at Work Policy, and IT Security Policy. Assist as required in the Council’s Emergency Plan. Communicate with clients at the required level or, as a client-focused role, be able to communicate with clients at the agreed level. Commit to the Councils’ Strategic Plan. Person Specification Qualified solicitor, barrister, chartered legal executive, or other qualified lawyer with local government experience. Post-qualification legal practice experience in property and regeneration. Experience advising at committees and member briefings on all aspects of property and regeneration law and procedures. A track record of providing legal advice and support to senior leaders and key decision-makers at the highest levels in property and regeneration law and practice. Experience operating in politically sensitive environments with a good degree of political nous. Experience and knowledge of the law in one of the following areas: Planning, Contracts & Commissioning, Contentious, Corporate Governance. Experience in partnership working or working within a shared service. Experience in best practice, innovation, and continuous improvement in the delivery of legal services. Good knowledge and understanding of property and regeneration law and practice, including giving advice, drafting, and negotiation. Knowledge and understanding of the political nature of local government and the democratic process. Personal gravitas with an ability to operate with confidence and credibility at the highest levels of the MKS authorities. High standards of written and oral communication with the ability to communicate with elected members, senior managers, and staff at all levels. Resilient and committed, remaining composed under pressure. Ability to respond efficiently to the changing needs of clients and competing priorities of the MKS authorities. Understanding of the role of legal services and how they can contribute to the achievement of corporate priorities. Understanding of the corporate priorities of the MKIP authorities and how they relate to the work of MKLS. Ability to travel to attend offices of the MKS authorities wherever that office may be based. Ability to be available to attend evening meetings remotely or at the offices of the MKS authorities and in emergencies or urgent management issues. Full driving licence.
