Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

South Elmsall | £57,000–£60,000 | Permanent | Engineering / Automation / Power Transmission / Bespoke Machinery

A global engineering organisation is looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to serve as a technical authority across automation systems, power transmission equipment and custom-engineered solutions.

This is a high-impact role for an engineer who can run multiple design phases simultaneously, take clear ownership of key project components and actively help shape the technical direction of the wider team. There's no direct line management, but the role does involve task assignment, design planning, supporting fellow engineers and mentoring junior team members — so genuine leadership qualities and a collaborative outlook are essential.

The Role

• Technical Innovation — Championing new methods, process improvements and better documentation across automation, power transmission and bespoke mechanical systems, acting as the go-to expert for complex technical problems

• Project Ownership — Taking charge of major project components or standalone projects and delivering to technical, schedule and budget requirements

• Advanced Problem Solving — Tackling complex engineering challenges by drawing on deep technical knowledge and hands-on mechanical design experience

• Bid & Proposal Support — Contributing expert technical input to bids, covering risk assessment, concept work, cost estimation and initial planning

• Design Lifecycle Delivery — Managing the design process end-to-end, from concept through to detailed design, including modelling, calculations, design reviews, production drawings and BOM creation

• Engineering Calculations — Carrying out and reviewing calculations using manual methods, spreadsheets, FEA and specialist software

• Client & Site Interaction — Taking part in client meetings, supporting site surveys, handling technical queries and contributing to installation, testing and commissioning activity

• Production Support — Assisting production teams with technical queries, red-line updates, inspections and Factory Acceptance Testing

• Legacy Equipment Support — Providing engineering support for existing and previously supplied equipment and systems

• Team Mentoring — Guiding and mentoring colleagues, supporting their CPD and helping build a positive, high-performing engineering culture

• Quality & Safety — Ensuring all work meets safety standards, quality requirements and engineering best practice

• Stakeholder Engagement — Developing strong working relationships with clients, suppliers, contractors and internal teams, representing the business professionally at all times

• Leadership Contribution — Chairing project meetings, presenting design concepts and ensuring colleagues feel valued and included in key discussions

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience

• Strong 3D CAD capability — AutoCAD or Inventor preferred

• Background in automated machinery, power transmission systems or bespoke mechanical equipment

• A genuine commitment to CPD and involvement with industry bodies, seminars and technical events

• Solid grasp of advanced engineering principles, comfortable working with minimal supervision

• Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills
