Senior / Principal Highways Civil Engineer
Initial 6-month contract
Outside IR35
Mainly remote working
About the Role
We are seeking a number of skilled and motivated Highways Civil Engineers to join our clients infrastructure team. The successful candidate will play a key role in the planning, design, and delivery of major highways projects, with a particular emphasis on schemes for National Highways.
Key Responsibilities
Undertake detailed design of highways and associated infrastructure in accordance with DMRB and MCHW specifications.
Manage and contribute to the development of feasibility studies, detailed design packages, and technical reports for National Highways schemes.
Support project delivery through all RIBA stages, from concept to construction.
Prepare drawings, specifications, and contract documents using CAD (AutoCAD/Civil 3D) and other industry-standard software.
Lead or support liaison with National Highways, local authorities, statutory bodies, and other key stakeholders.
Ensure project documentation complies with CDM 2015 and other relevant UK legislation.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
Monitor project budgets, programme schedules, and quality performance.Essential Requirements
BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (CEng/IEng), or working towards this with a relevant professional institution (ICE or CIHT).
Minimum 6 years' experience in the design and delivery of highways projects, with direct experience working on National Highways projects.
Strong knowledge of DMRB, MCHW, CDM Regulations, and National Highways standards and procedures.
Proficiency in design tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MX Road, and drainage design packages (e.g., MicroDrainage).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Desirable Skills
Experience with ECI (Early Contractor Involvement) and Design and Build contracts.
Understanding of Road Safety Audits and Traffic Modelling inputs.
BIM Level 2 compliance experience.
