Health, Safety & Environment (SHE) Advisor

About the Role
VGC is seeking a proactive and motivated SHE Advisor to join our team. You will play a key role in supporting regional Directors, Operations Managers, Contract Managers, and support departments in delivering excellence across all aspects of health, safety, and environmental performance. This is a hands-on role, involving site visits, audits, and active engagement with clients and internal teams to drive a culture of safety, sustainability, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Provide day-to-day SHE advice and support to operations and senior management.
Build collaborative relationships with client worksites, encouraging openness and cooperation.
Conduct regular site tours to identify good practices and areas for improvement, reporting findings with recommendations.
Assist in incident investigations, ensuring lessons are learnt and preventive measures implemented.
Attend and contribute to both client and internal SHE meetings, workshops, and events, reporting back on actions and trends.
Support the Head of Safety in interpreting and implementing changes in legislation, industry standards, and policies.
Carry out internal audits against ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and ISO 50001.
Assist in identifying and arranging SHE-related training.
Actively promote occupational health, wellbeing, welfare, and mental health initiatives.
Support VGC’s Energy Management System (EMS) and carbon reduction programme.
Promote VGC’s values of equality, diversity, and inclusion at every opportunity.
Contribute innovative ideas to enhance SHE policies, procedures, and processes.
Assist with monthly SHE performance dashboards and reporting.
Support the compilation and review of risk assessments.
Represent VGC in internal and external meetings, setting a strong example in SHE leadership.
What We’re Looking For
Essential Knowledge:
Strong understanding of the Rail, Civil, and Construction industries.
IOSH Managing Safety qualification.
Essential Skills & Experience:
Minimum 1 year of experience within the Railway or Construction industry.
Demonstrable experience in risk assessments.
Proven experience in accident & incident investigation.
Knowledge and experience in environmental matters.
CSCS card required (PTS certification desirable).
Attitudes & Behaviours:
Strong commitment to embedding a positive SHE culture.
Client-focused and solutions-oriented mindset.
Excellent team player with strong communication skills.
