Overview:
I'm working with a longstanding law firm that has recently secured a new criminal legal aid contract across South and Southeast London, and they’re looking for an experienced Duty Solicitor to step in and take ownership of this brand-new workstream.
This isn’t your typical rota-heavy role. It’s a rare opportunity to play a leading role in shaping and delivering duty solicitor services across multiple key boroughs — with full autonomy, trusted support, and the long-term scope to build a team around you.
The Role:
You'll be covering duty solicitor services across police stations and courts in Croydon, Wimbledon, Kingston, and Sutton, while enjoying the flexibility of a hybrid setup and a base office in Sutton. You’ll manage your own caseload and work closely with the partners to help shape the wider growth strategy.
This is a hands-on role for someone who’s confident in their ability to work independently, meet LAA standards, and provide outstanding representation at all stages of criminal proceedings. You’ll also play a central role in reporting, compliance, and operational improvement, making this an ideal fit for someone with ambition to grow within a strategic leadership role.
Key Responsibilities:

Deliver duty solicitor services at police stations and courts across South and Southeast London
*
Manage a fast-paced caseload independently, ensuring compliance with LAA and SRA requirements
*
Use LEAP case management system effectively, coordinating with paralegals and support staff
*
Foster strong working relationships with local police, court officials, and external stakeholders
*
Report on performance metrics, financials, and caseload trends to the partnership team
*
Identify ways to improve workflows, processes, and profitability
*
Escalate complex cases to the city support office where appropriate
*
Build toward leading a growing team of duty solicitors and support staff
About You:
*
Qualified solicitor with active Duty Solicitor accreditation
*
Ideally 3–4+ years’ PQE with recent, relevant duty solicitor experience (within the last 5 years)
*
Strong knowledge of criminal law procedures and LAA compliance
*
Comfortable working independently across multiple locations
*
Highly organised, resilient, and calm under pressure
*
Confident communicator with a client-first mindset
*
Commercially aware, with the drive to contribute to service development and profitability
*
Willingness to grow within the role, potentially mentoring junior solicitors as the workstream expands
