We are seeking an experienced HCPC Registered Speech and Language Therapist to deliver high quality specialist support for a young person presenting with Selective Mutism, Autism, and a history of trauma. This is a rewarding opportunity to make meaningful, long term impact through both direct therapeutic intervention and wider environmental support.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver 1 hour of direct 1:1 therapy per week, building a safe, positive therapeutic relationship.
Develop and implement a communication hierarchy tailored to the young person's needs.
Use evidence-based approaches for Selective Mutism, including:
Sliding In
Shaping
Desensitisation
Stimulus Fading
Trial therapeutic techniques and adapt your approach based on the young person's progress and comfort.
Provide indirect SaLT input each term (approx. 3 hours), including:
Staff training
Environmental adjustments
Coaching and guidance for education and care staff
Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, including attending MDT meetings.
Draft, monitor and update the young person's SaLT programme (3 hours allocated).
Provide training, guidance and support to school and care staff (approx. 9 hours).
Attend annual reviews and essential planning meetings, including report writing and liaison work (approx. 8 hours).Essential Experience
HCPC registration (required)
Experience working with Selective Mutism, including graded exposure and communication-building techniques
Experience supporting autistic young people, using neurodiversity-affirming approaches
Experience working with children with trauma histories and delivering trauma-informed practice
Strong background delivering both direct and indirect SaLT intervention
Experience working within multidisciplinary teams and liaising with professionals and families
Confidence training school and care staff
Ability to design, implement and review individual SaLT programmesDesirable
RCSLT membership
Previous experience working in school or local authority SEND settings
Experience supporting children in emotionally complex situationsPersonal Attributes

Highly skilled at building trust with selective communicators
Strong communication and organisational skills
