We're working with a major client delivering Britain's high-speed rail infrastructure programme, and we're recruiting a Systems Safety Interface Engineer to lead system safety activities across the construction and design phase.
This is a leadership role. You'll be responsible for ensuring that the railway being built is safe, technically integrated and compliant with regulatory requirements. You're the strategic link between contractors and independent assessment bodies, ensuring safety evidence flows clearly and demonstrably meets regulation.
You'll combine deep technical knowledge of railway safety with the ability to work across complex interfaces, multiple contractors, and external regulators. You'll manage risk assessments, develop safety arguments, and translate complex safety evidence into clear compliance demonstrations. Your work ensures the client meets its obligations under the Railways Interoperability Regulations and Common Safety Method on Risk Evaluation and Assessment.
What You'll Be Doing
Lead system safety activities across four major civil contractors, four stations, multiple railway system contracts and depots
Manage risk assessments for specific discipline areas, planning and running risk workshops that identify hazards and compliance gaps
Develop reports that justify and explain safety assessment results to internal teams and independent assessment bodies
Support the project-wide hazard record, analysing hazards and compliance evidence to meet regulatory requirements
Manage interfaces with independent assessment bodies and notified bodies, supporting contractors during assessments
Present safety arguments to regulators and assessment bodies, demonstrating compliance with engineering safety law and best practice
Work with contractors to ensure compliance with railway safety regulations, identifying non-compliances and driving corrective action
Input to strategic plans and key governance documents that shape how safety is managed across the programme
What We're Looking For
You're an engineer with substantial experience in railway safety engineering or safety management in safety-critical industries. You understand CSM-RA regulation or equivalent engineering safety management frameworks. You've managed hazard identification, risk assessment and compliance in major infrastructure or rail projects, or you've worked in consultancy delivering safety assessments for large-scale projects.
Your experience includes working with HAZOP, Fault Tree and Event Tree analysis. You've produced and reviewed hazard records and complex risk assessments. You understand EU and UK engineering safety law. You've presented safety arguments to regulators and independent bodies. You've interfaced with multiple contractors and managed a large supply chain through a safety-critical lens.
You can identify non-compliances quickly, interrogate complex technical evidence, and communicate safety risks clearly to both technical teams and regulators. You're pragmatic about balancing safety rigour with delivery timescales. You understand the complexity of integrating multiple contractors' work into a safe, compliant system.
