Job Description

Job Title: Teaching Assistant – Outreach (Primary & Secondary) Salary: Dependent on experience (in line with local pay scale) Contract Type: Permanent, Full-Time About the Role: We are seeking a flexible and committed Outreach Teaching Assistant to support pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, across both primary and secondary phases. This role involves working with pupils in a variety of settings — including mainstream schools, homes and community venues — to help re-engage them in education and build the foundations for long-term success. Key Responsibilities: Deliver high-quality, individualised learning support to pupils outside of the classroom environment. Support the transition of pupils between settings or back into full-time education. Build trusting, supportive relationships with pupils who may display challenging behaviour or be at risk of exclusion. Work in partnership with teachers, outreach coordinators, families, and external agencies to ensure joined-up support. Help implement personalised behaviour and learning plans in line with EHCPs and pastoral targets. Support with offsite learning, home visits, and re-engagement programmes, including transport and supervision as needed. Keep accurate records of interventions and pupil progress, feeding into review and planning processes. Essential Skills and Experience: Experience working with children and young people with SEN, particularly those with SEMH needs or at risk of school refusal. Confidence in working across a range of settings and age groups (KS1–KS4). Understanding of trauma-informed and relational approaches to behaviour support. Ability to work independently, using initiative and sound judgement. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build effective partnerships with families and professionals. Desirable: Relevant qualifications (e.g. Level 3 Teaching Assistant, Youth Work, Mentoring, or similar). Experience supporting outreach or alternative provision. Training in de-escalation strategies (e.g. Team Teach). Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between sites (mileage reimbursed). Personal Qualities: Empathetic, patient, and solution-focused. Resilient in the face of challenges and committed to making a difference. Able to establish safe, consistent, and professional boundaries. Passionate about supporting vulnerable pupils to access education and thrive. This is a unique opportunity to work creatively and flexibly to support some of the most vulnerable learners, helping them rebuild confidence, resilience, and access to learning.
