Job Description

Team Manager - Children's Social Care Location: Newcastle City Council Rate: £37.75 per hour Contract Type: Temporary / Agency Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week Job Purpose: To provide leadership, supervision, and operational management to a team of social workers and practitioners delivering statutory services to children, young people, and families in Newcastle. The role ensures safe, effective, and timely interventions in accordance with legal requirements and council policies, with a focus on improving outcomes and safeguarding children. Key Responsibilities: Lead and manage a team of children's social workers delivering child protection, child in need, and looked after children services. Oversee complex casework and ensure all statutory requirements and timescales are met. Chair key meetings such as strategy discussions, case planning meetings, and placement planning meetings. Provide regular reflective supervision and support staff through coaching, performance appraisal, and development plans. Ensure quality assurance and compliance through audits, case reviews, and reflective practice. Work in partnership with internal and external agencies including schools, health services, police, and voluntary sector. Contribute to service development, improvement plans, and performance targets. Manage risk, ensure safeguarding procedures are followed, and escalate concerns appropriately. Ensure all case recording and data is accurate and up-to-date on the council's case management system. Essential Requirements: Social Work qualification (e.g., BA/MA Social Work, DipSW, CQSW). Registration with Social Work England. Significant post-qualifying experience in statutory children's services, including child protection. Proven management or supervisory experience in a social work setting. Strong understanding of relevant legislation, including the Children Act 1989 and 2004, Working Together to Safeguard Children, and associated statutory guidance. Excellent leadership, communication, decision-making, and organisational skills. Ability to manage performance and deliver high-quality outcomes under pressure. Desirable: Experience working within a local authority setting such as Newcastle City Council. Familiarity with local safeguarding procedures and multi-agency working in the North East. Experience using Liquidlogic or similar case management systems.
