Technical Author
Location: Eynsham, Oxfordshire
Rate: £45-£55 per hour
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Technical Author to support the development, maintenance, and control of high‑quality manufacturing documentation. This role is critical in enabling safe, compliant, and efficient production by ensuring build instructions, FMEAs, and risk assessments are accurate, up to date, and aligned with engineering changes, regulatory requirements, and industry best practice.
You will work closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, and Industrial teams, playing a key role in formal change control and ensuring clear communication and traceability of documentation changes.
Key Responsibilities
Build Instructions & Manufacturing Documentation
Review, update, and maintain existing build instructions to ensure clarity, accuracy, and shop‑floor usability.
Create new build instructions for new products, processes, tooling, and changes to existing builds.
Collaborate with Manufacturing, Design, Quality, and Industrial Engineering teams to capture correct process steps, tooling, materials, and acceptance criteria.
Produce clear, structured, and operator‑friendly documentation using standard templates, diagrams, and images where appropriate.
FMEAs & Risk Assessments
Review, update, and maintain Process FMEAs (PFMEAs) in line with process changes, incidents, and continuous improvement activity.
Support the creation and maintenance of risk assessments, including process, task, safety, and ergonomic assessments.
Ensure risk controls, mitigations, and actions are clearly documented and aligned with build instructions and operating procedures.
Change Control & Document Management
Manage documentation through formal change control processes.
Assess the documentation impact of engineering and process changes and ensure updates are completed in a timely manner.
Maintain version control, revision history, and full traceability for controlled documents.
Coordinate document review, approval, release, and communication of changes to relevant stakeholders.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential
Proven experience as a Technical Author, Manufacturing Engineer, or in a similar documentation‑focused role within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
Strong experience creating and maintaining build or work instructions for shop‑floor use.
Working knowledge of FMEAs and manufacturing risk assessments.
Experience working within formal change control systems.
Excellent written communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, usable instructions.
High attention to detail with strong organisational skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams.
Desirable
Background in manufacturing, mechanical, or industrial engineering.
Experience working in regulated or safety‑critical industries.
Familiarity with document management systems (DMS).
