A new opportunity has arisen for a skilled Technical Author to join a well-established engineering group, supporting the development and rollout of high-quality technical documentation across electrical operations and equipment.
This role will play a key part in ensuring engineers have clear, accessible and compliant documentation to support field operations. The successful candidate will work closely with electricians, project teams, and safety professionals to improve consistency, accuracy, and understanding across the business.
About the Role
As a Technical Author, you will be responsible for producing and maintaining technical documentation for both new and existing electrical systems and procedures. This includes user manuals, fault-finding guides, installation and commissioning documents, safety manuals, training materials, and more. You'll help standardise field documentation, improve efficiency, and ensure compliance with all relevant safety standards and regulations.
This is a hands-on position that requires both strong technical writing skills and a solid understanding of electrical systems. It offers the opportunity to work with cross-functional teams and have a real impact on operational safety, consistency, and performance.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
* Create and maintain technical documentation, including manuals, training guides, safety instructions and maintenance procedures.
* Collaborate with internal teams to gather technical content and ensure documentation is clear, user-friendly, and accurate.
* Standardise field documents for use by electricians and field engineers.
* Support the rollout of documentation for new projects and equipment.
* Maintain version control, manage documentation repositories, and oversee access permissions.
* Act as a liaison between field teams and technical departments to ensure practical, real-world usability.
* Train staff on how to use new documentation and collect feedback for improvement.
* Stay current with relevant UK regulations and technical standards.
* Continuously review and improve documentation to reflect updates in processes, compliance requirements and operational needs.
Skills & Experience Required:
* Proven experience in a Technical Author or similar role focused on electrical systems.
* Demonstrable background producing documentation such as maintenance guides, technical manuals, and schematics.
* Understanding of electrical systems, including motors, controllers, instrumentation, and safety systems.
* Proficient in formatting and presenting complex technical content in a clear and accessible way.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritise effectively under tight deadlines.
* Able to work both independently and collaboratively across departments.
* Experience engaging with technical teams and translating hands-on knowledge into structured documentation.
Qualifications:
* HNC in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
* C&G 2382 – 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations.
* C&G 2391 – Inspection, Testing & Certification.
* COMPEX (beneficial but not essential).
* Full UK Driving Licence (occasional travel required).
