The Role
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Technical Manager to lead a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists. You will be responsible for overseeing R&D activities, managing technical operations, supporting product development, and aligning technical efforts with the strategic objectives of the business.
As a key member of the management team, you will contribute to strategic planning, budgeting, and cross-departmental collaboration.
Responsibilities Include:
•Leading a department of engineers and scientists across electronics, mechanics, software, optics, and product support
•Creating and executing short- and medium-term R&D plans
•Managing multiple development projects, ensuring timelines, budgets, and technical goals are met
•Conducting 1:1s, personal development reviews, and team coaching
•Supporting strategic product planning and technical roadmapping
•Managing departmental planning and budgets
•Collaborating with contractors, suppliers, and external partners
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
•Proven experience managing technical teams in a small or medium-sized business
•A strong technical background in electronics, mechanical, or software engineering (degree-level or equivalent experience)
•Hands-on experience in R&D project delivery
•Understanding of scientific instrumentation and IP considerations
•Experience working with external development partners and managing collaborative projects
•Ability to work across hybrid teams and foster a supportive, inclusive team culture
•A values-driven and ethical approach to management and innovation
Desirable (but not essential):
•Knowledge of sensing technologies or environmental/agricultural instrumentation
•Background in environmental science, agronomy, soil or plant science
•Familiarity with compliance and quality standards (e.g. ISO 9001)
