Job Description

Job Title: Technical Train Rider – New Fleets Location: Midlands Rate: £25 - £28 per hour - OUTSIDE IR35 Shifts: Days About the Role As part of an exciting new fleet programme, we’re looking for electrically qualified Technical Train Riders to support dynamic testing, fault identification, and system performance validation of next-generation rolling stock. In this high-profile role, you will ride new trains during live service and testing phases, working alongside engineering, testing, and commissioning teams to ensure the fleet is reliable, compliant, and ready for full passenger operation. Key Responsibilities * Ride onboard pre-service and in-service trains to monitor system performance in real time * Perform fault-finding and diagnostics on electrical, mechanical, and software-integrated systems * Liaise with engineering, testing, and depot teams to log, report, and escalate issues during dynamic testing and early service rollout * Conduct basic corrective actions and support deeper root-cause investigations * Capture detailed technical data and support the continuous improvement of new train performance * Ensure all work complies with railway safety, quality, and technical standards What We’re Looking For * NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Electrical or Rail Engineering * Experience in rolling stock, rail vehicle commissioning, or fleet introduction projects * Strong electrical fault-finding and diagnostic skills (traction, braking, doors, HVAC, control systems) * Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and test data * Comfortable working onboard moving trains and in a shift-based environment * Excellent communication skills and ability to work under pressure during live service support * PTS certification
