Key Responsibilities: Update and co-ordinate with other disciplines existing designs for track drainage systems for new and existing light rail/tram lines, including side drains, cross drains, catchpits, outfalls, and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS). Conduct any hydraulic modelling and surface water management assessments not already completed using appropriate software (e.g., MicroDrainage, InfoDrainage, or Causeway Flow). Collaborate with civil, track, structural, and environmental teams to integrate drainage designs with other disciplines. Review and, if required, prepare technical drawings, specifications, and reports, including Drainage Strategy Reports and Design Risk Assessments. Carry out site visits and surveys to inform design, validate existing conditions, or support construction. Update designs to ensure they comply with relevant standards, such as DfT, NR/L2/CIV/005 (where applicable), CIRIA SuDS Manual, and local authority drainage requirements. Support existing and new planning applications, consents, and engagement with stakeholders (e.g., Environment Agency, Lead Local Flood Authorities). Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and HAZOPs, ensuring buildability, maintainability, and safety of designs. Liaise with contractors and support construction teams with technical queries (TQ), design change requests, and site inspections. Job Requirements: BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering or a related discipline. Experience in drainage design on rail, tram, or urban transport infrastructure. Proficiency with design software: MicroDrainage/InfoDrainage, AutoCAD/Civil 3D, and GIS-based tools. Strong understanding of UK drainage regulations, standards, and planning processes. Knowledge of SuDS principles and integration in urban transit environments. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Desirable: Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status with ICE or similar (or working toward). Experience working on Transport and Works Act Orders (TWAO) or DCO projects. Familiarity with BIM workflows and digital design collaboration platforms (e.g., ProjectWise, Revit). Previous involvement in Network Rail, TfL, or local authority light rail/tram projects.
