About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated Practice Tutor Assessor (PTA) to support the professional development of trainee Probation Officers across the Yorkshire and Humber region. Working closely with the regional Learning and Development team and frontline operational managers, the PTA plays a vital role in delivering the PQiP (Professional Qualification in Probation) programme and supporting the national drive towards a more skilled, qualified probation workforce.
This is a key developmental role within the Probation Service, helping to ensure that new practitioners are fully equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to manage individuals on probation effectively and safely.
Key Responsibilities
Act as the designated assessor for a caseload of PQiP learners undertaking the Level 6 Professional Qualification in Probation
Provide structured, reflective practice observation, feedback, and assessment in line with HMPPS standards
Support the development of knowledge, application of theory to practice, and professional judgement across all key areas of probation case management
Work in partnership with line managers, SPOs and university providers to support learner progress and resolve any barriers to completion
Ensure learners maintain accurate, timely portfolios of evidence and are prepared for gateway reviews and end-point assessments
Contribute to the regional and national professionalisation agenda through quality assurance, moderation, and learner support activities
Participate in regular PTA meetings, CPD sessions, and standardisation events
Promote a culture of learning and continuous improvement across probation teamsEssential Requirements
Substantial experience as a qualified Probation Officer
Hold (or be willing to work towards) an assessing qualification (e.g. CAVA, A1, D32/D33)
Strong understanding of PQiP structure, evidence requirements, and assessment processes
Ability to coach, mentor, and support developing practitioners
Excellent organisational and communication skills
Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in learning and professional developmentDesirable
Previous experience as a Practice Tutor Assessor or Onsite Assessor
Familiarity with HMPPS learning platforms and assessment frameworks
Experience supporting learners with additional learning needsAdditional Information
Travel across the Yorkshire and Humber region will be required

Enhanced DBS and HMPPS vetting required
