Job Description – Specialist Tutor (English, Maths, and Science)
Location: Farnham
Hours: 15 hours per week
About the Student
We are seeking a dedicated and engaging tutor for a highly academic Year 10 student with a strong passion for science, especially biology and paleontology. The student has advanced literacy skills (reading age 18+, spelling age 16+) and is working above expected levels in English, maths, and science.
The student has a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and sensory processing differences, as well as some social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. He has previously experienced negative and suicidal thoughts, so an empathetic and supportive approach is essential.
Role Overview
The tutor will provide tailored support in English, maths, and science, with a focus on stretching the student’s academic potential while also offering a calm, structured, and understanding environment. Building trust and rapport will be as important as the academic input.
An interest in dinosaurs, biology, and paleontology would be a strong advantage, helping to connect learning to the student’s personal passions and long-term aspirations.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver engaging and challenging sessions in English, maths, and science at Year 10/GCSE level.
* Differentiate learning to match the student’s high academic ability while supporting SEMH and sensory needs.
* Create a positive, patient, and structured learning environment.
* Encourage and nurture the student’s interest in science, particularly biology and paleontology.
* Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to parents/guardians.
* Use creative strategies and real-world examples to maintain motivation and curiosity.
* Be alert to the student’s wellbeing, providing reassurance and encouragement.
Person Specification
Essential:
* Strong subject knowledge in English, maths, and science (up to GCSE level).
* Experience supporting young people with ASD and/or SEMH needs.
* Patient, empathetic, and flexible approach.
* Ability to build positive relationships and adapt to individual needs.
* Clear communication skills.
Desirable:
* A background or strong interest in biology, paleontology, or natural sciences.
* Male tutor preferred (to support student comfort and engagement).
* Experience in mentoring or pastoral support.
* Knowledge of strategies to support sensory processing needs.
