As the Works Manager you will be responsible for coordinating and supervising ship repair and other marine projects, managing production staff to ensure work is delivered safely, on time, and within budget.
The role includes oversight of equipment, materials, compliance with company policies and legal regulations, and ensuring work meets the highest quality standards. Daily operations, progress monitoring, and close collaboration with the General Manager, Fabrication Manager, and wider team are key aspects of the role.
Ship repair/marine experience is required for the role.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee ship repair and other jobs/projects from initiation through to completion.
Supervise and monitor production staff and subcontractors.
Ensure projects are delivered safely, to specification, and on schedule.
Manage projects from the viewing and quotation stage.
Track performance against budgeted hours, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work.
Ensure projects are completed within time and budget constraints.
Build and maintain strong customer relationships, striving for excellent feedback.
Support the General Manager in developing new business opportunities and sales.
Be readily available via telephone and/or email for the responsive nature of the business.
Support the achievement of annual budgets and business unit targets.
Manage purchasing and inventory of consumables, plant, and materials to prevent delays.
Conduct site visits and surveys to support accurate quotations.
Ensure all projects have necessary safety, health, environment, and quality documentation in place.
Maintain and complete lifetime quality records (LTQRs) for all projects.
Uphold company housekeeping and organisation standards across all work areas.
Ensure all employees comply with health, safety, and environmental legislation.
Implement safe systems of work in line with company policies.
Assist in monitoring training needs and ensuring staff receive appropriate training.
Ensure timely and accurate reporting of accidents, incidents, and near misses.
Qualifications & Experience:
Excellent spoken and written English; professional interaction with staff, managers, and suppliers.
Positive outlook with colleagues, customers, and tasks.
Competent in Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, and Email.
IOSH Managing Safely (preferred).
Strong background in marine/ship repair projects.
Proven management and supervisory experience in marine and ship repair environments.
Flexibility to travel for business needs.
Full UK driving licence.
Strong organisational and planning skills.
Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and parts manuals.
Ability to motivate and lead a team effectively.
