We are seeking an experienced and proactive Assistant Site Manager to support the delivery of a large-scale prison construction project. The successful candidate will assist with the day-to-day management of site operations, ensuring works are completed safely, on programme, to the required quality standards, and in compliance with all security and regulatory requirements associated with custodial facilities.
This role requires strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and a solid understanding of construction processes, health and safety regulations, and subcontractor management.
Key Responsibilities
Support the Site Manager in the overall coordination and management of construction activities.
Supervise subcontractors and direct labour to ensure work is completed safely and efficiently.
Monitor progress against programme and report on delays, risks, and mitigation measures.
Conduct daily site inspections and ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.
Assist with the implementation and enforcement of site-specific security procedures required for prison projects.
Participate in site inductions, toolbox talks, and safety briefings.
Review RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements) and ensure workforce compliance.
Coordinate deliveries, logistics, and site access arrangements.
Maintain accurate site records, including diaries, progress reports, permits, and inspection records.
Assist in managing snagging, quality control, and defect resolution.
Liaise with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and other stakeholders as required.
Support the management team in achieving project milestones and contractual obligations.
Ensure all activities are carried out in accordance with company policies and relevant legislation.
Essential Requirements
* Gold CSCS Card (Supervisory level) – mandatory.
* SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme) – mandatory.
* Proven experience working in a supervisory or assistant site management role on construction projects.
* Strong understanding of construction methods, sequencing, and site logistics.
* Good knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation and CDM Regulations.
* Experience managing subcontractors and coordinating multiple trades.
* Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
* Competent in maintaining site records and reporting progress.
* Strong organisational and communication skills.
* Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable Requirements
* SMSTS qualification.
* First Aid at Work certificate.
* Experience on secure government, custodial, defence, healthcare, or public-sector projects.
* Knowledge of prison or high-security construction environments.
* Temporary Works Awareness training.
* Fire Marshal training.
* HNC/HND or degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related discipline.
