Building Services Technician – University of Cambridge (MRC Toxicology Unit) Location: Cambridge
Salary: £33,951 – £39,906 (DOE)
Contract: Fixed Term until March 2027
Hours: Full Time, On-Site
We’re working in partnership with the University of Cambridge to recruit a Building Services Technician for their world-renowned MRC Toxicology Unit. The Role
As Building Services Technician, you’ll support the Building Manager to ensure the smooth running of the Unit’s facilities and building systems. You’ll be responsible for the safe operation, inspection, and maintenance of key building services across laboratories, offices, and plant rooms.
What you'll be doing:
Maintain and operate complex building systems, including HVAC, steam boilers, and mechanical plant.
Carry out diagnostics, fault-finding, and reactive repairs on electrical and mechanical systems.
Support compliance with fire safety, water hygiene, and health & safety standards.
Manage contractor activity and ensure safe systems of work are followed at all times.
Oversee building access, security systems, and environmental controls.
Handle the maintenance and safe use of medical and laboratory gas systems.
Support with stores management, procurement of materials, and waste control.
Contribute to sustainability initiatives and environmental compliance.
Participate in the out-of-hours emergency rota when required.
About You
We’re looking for a proactive and reliable technician with experience maintaining complex building services, ideally within a research, hospital, or similar technical environment.
Essential:
Degree, HNC, or NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent experience) in a mechanical or electrical discipline.
Strong technical knowledge of building systems, including HVAC and steam plant.
Excellent problem-solving and fault-finding skills.
Good understanding of health & safety, risk assessments, and fire safety procedures.
Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Desirable:
BOAS Steam Boiler qualification.
Experience in a scientific or laboratory setting.
Knowledge of sustainability and energy efficiency practices.
