Engineering Manager – Mechanical

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne

Salary: On application

Employment type: Permanent, full-time

We are recruiting an experienced Engineering Manager to lead and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team of approximately 15 people within a specialist engineering business. This is primarily a people and departmental leadership role. You will oversee the day-to-day running of the engineering function, managing performance, workloads, resources and technical delivery. However, you must also come from a strong mechanical design background and be capable of reviewing designs, challenging technical decisions and providing credible guidance to the team.

The role

As Engineering Manager, you will take overall responsibility for the engineering department and ensure projects are properly resourced, controlled and delivered to the required technical, commercial and regulatory standards. Your responsibilities will include:

  * Leading, managing and developing a team of approximately 15 engineers

  * Overseeing workloads, priorities, resource allocation and project schedules

  * Holding regular one-to-one meetings and conducting performance reviews

  * Supporting recruitment, onboarding, training and succession planning

  * Coaching and mentoring engineers at different stages of their careers

  * Setting clear departmental objectives and maintaining accountability

  * Ensuring engineering deliverables are completed accurately and on time

  * Reviewing mechanical designs and guiding important technical decisions

  * Managing technical queries and maintaining engineering best practice

  * Working closely with Project Managers, clients and other stakeholders

  * Ensuring designs comply with client specifications and relevant regulations

  * Overseeing the preparation of engineering documentation, including risk assessments and FMECA

  * Maintaining effective engineering control procedures and supporting external audits

  * Contributing to the continual improvement of the company’s Business Management System

About you

We are looking for an established engineering leader who combines strong people-management skills with practical mechanical design experience. You will ideally have:

  * Previous experience managing or leading an engineering or design team

  * A strong background in mechanical engineering and mechanical design

  * The confidence to manage a team of approximately 15 engineers

  * Hands-on experience within an engineering or manufacturing environment

  * The ability to review designs and provide credible technical direction

  * Experience managing performance, development and difficult conversations

  * Strong planning, resource-management and project-delivery skills

  * Excellent communication, stakeholder-management and conflict-resolution abilities

  * A sound understanding of engineering control and quality procedures

  * Experience working within an ISO 9001 environment or participating in external audits

  * An engineering degree, HNC/HND or equivalent practical experience

Experience using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD would be beneficial. Previous experience within a highly regulated engineering sector would also be advantageous, but is not essential if you have the right combination of leadership and mechanical design expertise.
