The Group Workshop Manager Opportunity
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Group Workshop Manager to join a busy and growing fleet operation.
This is a hands-on role, with approximately 80% of your time spent on the tools, carrying out maintenance, diagnostics and repairs, while also taking responsibility for the day-to-day management of the workshop team.
You'll oversee a modern fleet of approximately 40 commercial vehicles, including tippers and road sweepers, ensuring vehicles are maintained to the highest safety and compliance standards while keeping downtime to an absolute minimum.
Group Workshop Manager duties
Carry out servicing, diagnostics, repairs, inspections and maintenance on HGVs and specialist municipal vehicles.
Lead and support a team of 5 HGV Technicians, Garage Manager and 1 Workshop Administrator.
Plan and prioritise workshop activity to maximise vehicle availability.
Ensure all maintenance is completed in line with DVSA standards and operator licence requirements.
Oversee inspections, defect rectification and preventative maintenance programmes.
Provide technical support and guidance to the workshop team.
Monitor workshop performance, productivity and quality standards.
Liaise with suppliers to ensure parts availability and cost-effective purchasing.
Support apprenticeship development and encourage high engineering standards throughout the workshop.
Maintain accurate workshop records using fleet management systems.Group Workshop Manager experience/qualifications
We're looking for someone who enjoys remaining technically involved whilst taking responsibility for leading a small, skilled workshop team.
Extensive experience as an HGV Technician with supervisory or workshop management experience.
HGV mechanical qualifications (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent).
Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills.
Experience maintaining HGVs and specialist fleet vehicles such as tippers, road sweepers or similar.
Good understanding of DVSA regulations and operator licence compliance.
Excellent organisational and planning skills.
The ability to motivate, develop and support a workshop team.
A proactive approach to reducing downtime and improving fleet reliability.
Experience using workshop management or fleet maintenance systems would be advantageous.
