About the Role
Our client, a leading consultancy within the transport and infrastructure sector, is seeking an experienced Highway Design Engineer to join their expanding Engineering Design Team. This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious engineer to work on a wide range of challenging and high-profile projects, with clear potential for progression.
You'll play a key role in delivering high-quality design solutions across highways, drainage, and broader civil infrastructure projects. Working within a collaborative team environment, you will support project delivery from concept through to construction, while helping mentor junior engineers and technicians.
Key Responsibilities
Produce concept, feasibility, and detailed designs for highway and drainage infrastructure schemes.
Deliver planning-stage layouts to support transport planning submissions.
Develop 3D designs using Civil 3D, ensuring compliance with DMRB, Manual for Streets, and project-specific standards.
Create sketch concepts, general arrangement drawings and relevant technical outputs.
Assist with contract documentation, specifications, and technical reports.
Conduct site inspections, surveys, and provide occasional site supervision.
Offer guidance and coaching to junior team members.
Manage small projects or project elements, ensuring delivery within time and budget constraints.
Develop and propose innovative engineering solutions to benefit clients.
Maintain awareness of commercial and technical project management.
Keep up to date with industry developments and contribute to internal knowledge-sharing.What We're Looking For
Essential:
Minimum 3 years' experience in highway, infrastructure, or drainage design.
Proven experience taking projects through the technical approval process (e.g. Section 278/38, Section 104/106).
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and related design packages.
Strong understanding of DMRB, Manual for Streets, and other relevant design standards.
Awareness of DCG drainage guidance and Building Regulations.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
A strong team player with commercial awareness.
HNC with extensive experience or degree in Civil Engineering (BSc/BEng).
Membership of ICE/CIHT or similar professional institution.Desirable:
MEng in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
Experience with micro-drainage software.
Working towards or already achieved IEng/CEng status.What's on Offer
