Job Description

This role has a starting salary of £33,552 per annum, based on a 36-hour working week. We are excited to be hiring two Highway Maintenance Officers to join our fantastic Maintenance team. The team is based in Merrow, Guildford with other offices around the County that can be utilised as places to work. This is an important front facing role and will be the focal point for delivering and supporting a range of maintenance activities. Reporting to the Senior Maintenance Officer, you will be part of a team which needs to be flexible and deal with issues over a wide geographical area. It is regarded by members and residents as one of the most important services provided by the Council. As such, the service manages significant financial, health and safety, and reputational risks. The service operates in an environment with significant political engagement, and has daily contact with MPs, cabinet members, backbench members and committees. The team are the eyes and ears on the ground and support significant or emergency events. About the Role As a Highway Maintenance Officer, you will undertake works and manage resources commissioned by both the team and on behalf of others. Working with a range of contractors, you will help to ensure value for money and a quality service for our residents. You will communicate with customers and promote the work of Highways and Transport and enhance the public appreciation of the statutory framework, financial constraints, and engineering standards within which it operates. You will work closely with the Highways Technical Support and Communication team to ensure issues are dealt with according to policy and procedures. The work requires a considerable amount of time working in the field, making highway site visits, using mobile technology to access information and a proportion of the time working from the office. This role is varied with different challenges each day, ranging from investigating drainage issues to reporting defective signs and line and explaining what we are doing to customers and members. You will always be expected to uphold excellent customer care standards and communicate directly with a range of stakeholders, including residents and elected members.
