We are seeking an experienced Interim Technical Manager to provide leadership and technical expertise within our food manufacturing facility. This role is critical in ensuring product safety, legal compliance, and the maintenance of robust quality systems during a period of transition. The successful candidate will oversee all technical operations, support continuous improvement, and act as the primary interface with customers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Compliance
*
Lead the Technical and Quality teams to ensure all products meet food safety, quality, and legal standards.
*
Maintain and improve site compliance with BRCGS, retailer standards, and relevant regulatory requirements.
*
Oversee site audit readiness and manage external audits, including regulatory and customer audits.
Quality Management
*
Ensure the Quality Management System (QMS) is current, effective, and aligned with best practice.
*
Manage non-conformance investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.
*
Review and approve product specifications, artwork, labelling, and technical documentation.
Food Safety & HACCP
*
Chair HACCP meetings and oversee the maintenance and validation of HACCP plans.
*
Lead risk assessments relating to food safety, allergens, traceability, foreign body controls, and supplier approval.
Team & Stakeholder Management
*
Provide hands-on leadership to Quality, Hygiene, and Technical staff, ensuring clarity, motivation, and strong performance.
*
Act as the technical point of contact for retailers, customers, and suppliers.
*
Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, NPD, Supply Chain, and Engineering to deliver safe and consistent quality products.
Continuous Improvement
*
Drive improvements in GMP, factory standards, and quality culture across the site.
*
Support NPD and process development trials to ensure safe and compliant product launches.
*
Analyse quality data and identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
Skills & Experience Required
*
Proven experience as a Technical Manager or Senior Technical Lead in food manufacturing (interim or permanent).
*
Strong knowledge of BRCGS, retailer Codes of Practice (e.g., Tesco, M&S, Sainsbury’s), and food safety legislation.
*
Extensive experience managing audits, QMS systems, and HACCP.
*
Demonstrated ability to lead teams through change or transition.
*
Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships internally and externally.
*
A hands-on, pragmatic approach with the ability to quickly assess site needs and deliver solutions.
Qualifications
*
Degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Microbiology, or related discipline (preferred).
*
HACCP Level 3 or 4 certification.
*
Food Safety and Quality-related training and accreditations are an advantage.
