Job Description

Neighbourhood Engineer (M&E) London | Permanent Circa £50,000 per annum; £66,600 including emergency call-out 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday We are looking for an experienced Neighbourhood Engineer with a strong mechanical or electrical background to support the safe, compliant and cost-effective operation of building services across a residential property portfolio. This is a varied, field-based opportunity combining technical inspections, contractor oversight, compliance work and practical problem-solving. You will spend four days each week visiting sites across London and one day working from the office. Mileage is paid. The role will suit someone who has previously worked “on the tools” within a mechanical or electrical discipline and is now comfortable applying that knowledge to inspections, technical reporting and the management of contractors and remedial works. The role You will provide technical support and advice on mechanical and electrical equipment, helping colleagues and external contractors maintain, service and repair building systems to the required standards. A key part of the position will be completing site surveys, inspecting installed equipment and producing clear technical reports. You will help identify failing systems, capture asset information and confirm that installations comply with statutory requirements and the organisation’s own standards. Your responsibilities will include: Completing a minimum of four M&E site inspections each week Surveying equipment, identifying defects and capturing asset data Producing technical reports, specifications and inspection notes Providing technical support to contract and housing management teams Monitoring planned maintenance, compliance programmes and repairs Post-inspecting completed installations and contractor works Reviewing contractor quotations for technical suitability and value for money Recording health and safety concerns identified during inspections Working constructively with residents, contractors and other stakeholders Attending emergency call-outs as the organisation’s representative Occasionally supporting access arrangements for compliance inspections Following relevant statutory, health and safety and financial proceduresAbout you You will need a practical understanding of building services systems, supported by hands-on experience in a mechanical or electrical trade. Essential requirements include: Working knowledge of building services systems Previous “on the tools” experience in a mechanical or electrical discipline A relevant trade qualification, such as an apprenticeship, NVQ, City & Guilds or 18th Edition qualification Experience managing works and contractors Experience writing technical reports and specifications The ability to explain complex technical matters clearly to non-technical stakeholdersExperience within residential housing would be helpful, as would knowledge of asset management systems or tools. A degree, HND or HNC in Building Services Engineering or a related discipline would also be advantageous. You will work four days per week across sites in London and one day in the office. The position includes participation in a remote emergency call-out rota twice per week, paid at £300 per week. The total package is stated as £66,600 including emergency call-out payments. A basic DBS check is required. Benefits include an excellent package, employer pension contributions of up to 10% and paid support for professional development.
