SEN Specialist Tutor - Outreach Tuition Location: Southend Position: SEN Specialist Tutor - Outreach Tuition Age Range: Primary School Subjects: Maths and English essential; Science desirable Hours: 0-40 hours per week (0-hour contract) Typical Referral: 10-15 hours per week per student Pay Rate: £25-£35 per hour Contract Type: Ongoing / Long-Term Working Hours: Primarily during school hours About the Role We are seeking dedicated and experienced SEN Specialist Tutors to provide personalised, one-to-one outreach tuition to primary-aged students across Southend. This role is ideal for a tutor who is passionate about supporting children who may be struggling to access mainstream education due to additional learning needs, SEND, school anxiety, or other barriers to education. You will deliver engaging and highly individualised tuition programmes designed to help students re-engage with learning, rebuild confidence, develop essential skills, and make meaningful academic progress. Maths and English teaching experience is essential. The ability to support Science and the wider primary curriculum is highly desirable. Most referrals involve approximately 10-15 hours of tuition per student per week, generally delivered during school hours, although flexibility may be required depending on the individual learner and referral. This is an outreach-based role, so tuition may take place in a learner's home, community setting, or another suitable agreed location. About the Students The students you support may have a range of additional needs and barriers to education, including: Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC/ASD) ADHD Dyslexia Dyscalculia Speech and Language Difficulties SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs School anxiety Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) Previous disengagement from mainstream education Gaps in learning or difficulties accessing the curriculumYou will need to be confident adapting your approach to meet the individual needs of each learner and creating a calm, supportive environment where they can feel safe and successful. Key Responsibilities Deliver high-quality, one-to-one outreach tuition to primary-aged learners. Teach Maths and English confidently across the primary age range. Support learners across the wider primary curriculum, including Science where appropriate. Assess individual learning needs and identify gaps in knowledge. Plan and deliver structured, personalised learning programmes. Adapt teaching methods and resources to suit different SEND profiles and learning styles. Support learners to work towards their EHCP targets, curriculum objectives and academic goals. Build positive, trusting relationships with learners who may have experienced significant barriers to education. Monitor progress and maintain accurate records of learning, engagement and achievement. Provide appropriate feedback and updates to parents, carers, schools and relevant professionals. Work collaboratively with families and other professionals involved in the learner's education. Candidate Requirements We are looking for tutors who have: Strong experience teaching primary Maths and English. Experience working with primary-aged students. Previous experience supporting children with SEN/SEND; a minimum of two years' experience is preferred. A strong understanding of different SEND profiles and effective strategies for supporting learners with additional needs. The ability to engage and motivate students who may be anxious, disengaged or reluctant to learn. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills. A patient, adaptable and empathetic approach. The ability to work independently and confidently within an outreach environment. Strong organisational skills and the ability to plan structured, purposeful sessions. An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one. A genuine passion for helping children overcome barriers to education and achieve their potential. Essential Subject Expertise Maths - Essential English - Essential Desirable Subject Expertise Science - Desirable Experience supporting Science at primary level would be particularly advantageous. Desirable Qualifications & Experience Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), PGCE or equivalent teaching qualification. Primary teaching qualification or relevant degree. SEN/SEND-related qualifications or specialist training. Experience supporting learners with EHCPs. Experience working within alternative provision, specialist settings or mainstream schools. Previous experience delivering outreach tuition. Experience supporting learners experiencing school anxiety, EBSA or prolonged absence from education. Why Join Us?
