Job Description

About the Role An established engineering consultancy delivering major power, utility, and renewable energy projects is seeking an experienced Team Lead - Substation Electrical Design to join its growing engineering team. This is a leadership role responsible for managing the electrical design function across high-voltage substation projects. You will provide technical direction, oversee project delivery, mentor engineers, and ensure all design work is completed to the highest standards of quality, safety, and technical compliance. The role is primarily office-based with flexible working arrangements, although occasional travel to project sites and client meetings may be required. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage the electrical design team on high-voltage substation and utility infrastructure projects. Provide technical leadership across all aspects of substation electrical design, including primary plant, secondary systems, protection and control interfaces, design calculations, and technical specifications. Plan, allocate, and monitor engineering resources to ensure projects are delivered on schedule and within budget. Review and approve engineering deliverables, ensuring compliance with project requirements, applicable standards, and industry best practices. Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency and deliver value engineering solutions. Support and mentor engineers, promoting technical development and knowledge sharing within the team. Take ownership of complex design projects from concept through detailed design and construction support. Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, project managers, contractors, and external stakeholders. Identify technical and project risks, implementing mitigation strategies where required. Promote a strong culture of health, safety, quality, and continuous improvement. Requirements Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering. Minimum of 8 years' experience within electrical engineering, with significant experience in high-voltage substation design. Proven experience leading engineering teams or acting as a technical lead on major infrastructure projects. Strong understanding of primary and secondary substation design principles. Experience preparing technical specifications, design calculations, and engineering documentation. Familiarity with utility, transmission, distribution, or renewable energy projects. Proficient in AutoCAD, EPLAN, Microsoft Office, and other relevant engineering software. Experience with power system studies or cable design software would be advantageous. Knowledge of utility design standards and engineering specifications is desirable. Skills & Experience Strong leadership and people management skills. Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities. Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams across multiple projects. Commercial awareness with an understanding of programme, cost, and resource management. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritise workloads and manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Good understanding of the interface between engineering design and construction delivery.
