About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN Teacher to join a nurturing specialist provision in Halifax. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced teacher with a genuine passion for supporting children with autism, communication difficulties, and complex learning needs.
The school caters for up to 20 students, with class sizes of no more than four pupils. Each class is supported by a Teacher and a Teaching Associate, ensuring a highly individualised and structured learning environment where every child is given the attention, care, and support they need to thrive.
You’ll deliver a range of subjects — including Maths, English, PSHE, and Science — while tailoring lessons to meet each child’s academic ability, communication level, and emotional needs. Many students are non-verbal and require creative teaching strategies using visual aids, PECS, and Makaton to aid communication and engagement.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver engaging and differentiated lessons for children with autism and complex communication needs.
* Support non-verbal learners using visual supports, PECS, and Makaton.
* Develop and review individual education plans (IEPs) and work closely with EHCP outcomes.
* Foster a calm, structured, and nurturing classroom environment.
* Encourage positive relationships and emotional regulation through consistent routines and therapeutic approaches.
* Work collaboratively with Teaching Associates, parents, and multi-agency professionals.
* Promote inclusion, wellbeing, and independence across all learning experiences.
What We’re Looking For
* Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – essential.
* Minimum of 3 years’ experience teaching in a SEN or specialist education setting.
* Proven experience supporting non-verbal children and those with autism and complex needs.
* Strong understanding of EHCPs and the SEND Code of Practice (2014).
* Confident using visual communication tools, including PECS and Makaton.
* Excellent behaviour management, patience, and creativity.
* Committed to safeguarding and maintaining the highest standards of care.
* Reflective, positive, and adaptable approach to supporting each learner’s journey.
Why Join Us
* A rewarding and meaningful role where every day makes a difference.
* Small class sizes (maximum of four pupils per class) with dedicated support staff.
* Supportive and collaborative team culture focused on wellbeing and professional growth.
* Comprehensive training and career progression opportunities.
* Competitive salary, family-friendly policies, and Employee Assistance Programme.
* Refer-a-Friend bonus and other staff benefits.
