Responsibilities and duties of the Senior Electrical Design Engineer role
Reporting to the Head of Design you will:
Produce electrical layouts for substations (AIS up to 132kV), switchrooms, control rooms, LV networks, and cable routes.
Design BoP/EPC site plans for renewable projects, including battery storage and solar installations.
Lead earthing system design and analysis for substations and renewable energy sites, acting as the project's named earthing design engineer.
Carry out soil resistivity testing, earth potential rise (EPR) studies, touch/step voltage assessments, fall of potential testing, impressed voltage studies, lightning risk assessments (BS (phone number removed), and EMC studies.
Model earthing systems in CDEGS and produce associated technical reports.
Produce busbar calculations, busbar/clamp schedules, and initial support structure designs for steel fabrication.
Produce specifications for plant items like disconnectors and circuit breakers; approve cable data sheets in line with project standards.
Produce switchroom/control room layouts including heating, lighting, ventilation, cable management, wall elevations, and block diagrams.
Prepare site-wide ducting/cabling layouts and earthing material schedules to guide installation teams.
Ensure all designs and drawings are reviewed, checked, and approved, including work from external suppliers.
Collaborate with other disciplines (structural, planning, CAD technicians) to deliver integrated solutions.
Embed safety and sustainability by design, ensuring CDM 2015 compliance.
Resolve design challenges and ensure project scope is delivered on time, on budget, and to quality standards.
Manage external design suppliers as needed.
Mentor and supervise junior engineers; contribute to team training and designer risk assessments.
Professional qualifications
We are looking for someone with the following:
Degree, HND, or HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems Electrical preferred).
Proven HV/EHV substation design experience (11kV-132kV).
Strong knowledge of key British and International Standards (BS7671, ENATS TS 12-24, ENATS 41-24, ENATS 43-8, BS EN (phone number removed):2012, ENATS S40, ENATS S39, BS EN (phone number removed), NGTS 2.01, BS7354).
Hands-on earthing design experience, including CDEGS modelling and testing.
Experience in consultancy, contracting, or utility environments within the power industry.
Experience managing specialist design teams.
Experience in primary electrical design of HV/EHV AC substations and BoP projects (11kV-132kV).
Understanding of HV/EHV installation standards and cable installation requirements.
Ability to produce and interpret technical documentation.
Knowledge of designer responsibilities under CDM 2015 and ability to carry out designer risk assessments.
Desirable: experience with 3D CAD software such as Revit.
